Abū Bakr was the son of aftal-garād ʻAbd al-Mannān and grandson of amīr Muḥammad (r. 1782-1783). He succeeded his uncle and father-in-law ʻAbd al-Karīm as amīr of Harar. Abū Bakr campaigned against the surrounding Oromo, but after initial success, the Oromo managed gradually to reduce Harar's sphere of influence.
Commissioned the writing of Daftar taqwīm al-iḥsāʼ aʻnī al-istātistīk al-harariyya (AAIE00290).
