Collection
Bodleian Library - Bruce collection
Manuscripts gathered by James Bruce during his travels and stay in Maghreb, Egypt and Ethiopia. They are totally 96 manuscripts: 70 in Arabic, 25 Ethiopic, one Coptic (on papyrus). Each volume bears an armorial bookplate of 'Bruce of Kinnard'. In 1827 and 1842 the collection was unsuccessfully offered for sale; the Bodleain finally purchased them in 1843. They are briefly described by Alexander Murrey in his edition of Bruce's Travels (1813), vol. 7. The medical mss are included in Savage-Smith New Catalogue. Here are described only the Arabic mss copied or evidently passed through the regions of the Horn of Africa.
