The name of the author is given sometmes as al-ḥakīm Hirmūs and other times as Hirmis ibn al-Bayṭār, which is a confusion and conflating of the Spanish botanist Ibn al-Bayṭār (d. 646/1248) with the Greek figure Hermes Trismegistus, who is often invoked as an authority for magical and occult medical remedies.
