Biographic comments

Ḥanbalī theologian, preacher and ṣūfī, who was the eponym of the Qādiriyya ṭarīqa. He was born in Ǧīlān, south of the Caspian Sea but as a young man he traveled to Baġdād to study. Later he spent 25 years as a recluse in the remote areas of Iraq. He finally returned to Baġdād where he preached and taught until his death. His tomb is located in Ruṣāfa in Baġdād. He came to be regarded as the quṭb of the Eastern ṣūfism.
