Biographic comments
One of the earliest and most distinguished Wallo mystics and reformers. His father was a well known mystic who is believed to have worked miracles and was at odds with the secular leaders of the time; this seems to have had strong impact on Ǧaʻfar character and career as a reformer. He is supposed to have met al-Ḫiḍr, like his father. He was an ascetic and missionary-traveller establishing many ṣūfī centres and acquiring waqf-land for their maintenance. He showed a strong commitment to the abolition of certain practices and rituals associated with the chewing of chāt leaves and against judges and reciters who apparently violated Islamic law. The rivalry between šayḫ Ǧaʻfar and the Muslim religious authorities represented a cleavage between the survival and persistence of old belief and practices and the emergence of a regenerated orthodox Islam.
