One of the most prominent figures of Italian orientalism. He was professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University of Rome "la Sapienza" (Hebrew and Semitic languages, 1876-1919; "History and Languages of Abyssinia, 1886-1919). He was among the founders of the School of Oriental Studies in Rome and of the "Rivista degli Studi Orientali", which he directed since its foundation. He gave a seminal contribution to Ethiopian studies, writing the first Italian-Amharic Dictionary (1901) and the "Grammatica elementare della lingua amarica" ("Basic grammar of Amharic language", 1889, re-edited in 1952), together with several academic articles.
