Biographic comments
He was a descendent of a 16th century Kurdish Ottoman soldier and a Beǧa woman. His family had long been engaged in Red Sea trade.
He joined the ranks of the Mahdist movement in 1883, after having been arrested by the British and spent time in an Egyptian prison.
He was appointed as amīr and commander of the Red Sea area and led the Mahdist forces against the Anglo-Egyptian army scoring some victories between 1883-1885.
