Biographic comments
From the Modayto dynasty. He was the Sultan of Awsa from 1944 to his death. He had a limited political authority but a great local influence, being the cultural and spiritual leader of the Afar people. He is especially remembered for his contribution to agricultural innovation and for the infrastructural development of the region, attracting foreign investiments. He is also very admired outside Afar region for his patriotism, his support to Ethiopian unity, and his resistence to the Derg regime, which led him to flee to Saudi Arabia in 1975.
