Biographic comments
Descendant of an aristocratic family of Gondär and Lasta and the royal house of Šäwa, being his father a cousin of Ḫaylä Śəllase. When Ethiopia was invaded by the Italians in 1935, he fled the country with his family, then, during the war of liberation he joined Ḫaylä Śəllase in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan to attend a military school, and become an officer. He obtained the military and then civilian governance of several provinces. In 1957 was appointed Vice-president and in 1961 President of the Senate. In 1964 he was assigned to the province of Eritrea. He acted as a reformist and liberal-minded man even if he had an image of conservative and reactionary aristocrat in the popular mind.
