Biographic comments

Sunnī šāfiʻī founder of the ṣūfī order called Aḥmadiyya Badawiyya; his genealogy goes back to ʻAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.
He was born in Fez, and when he was around 35 he retired to ascetic practices after having deeply studied the Qurʻān according to the seven official qirāʼāt. He went to Iraq as suggested by the mystical visions he had, and visited the shrines of the saints buried there; then he moved to Ṭanṭā, Egypt, where he spent the rest of his life. There he bacame known as a saint and attracted many followers, among whom was the Mamluk Sultan Baybars. Many miracles are attributed to him as well as many prayers and ḥizb.
