Biographic comments

He is considered the main agent of diffusion of the Tiǧāniyya in Mauritania, after he left Fes and the company of Aḥmad al-Tiǧanī. He was from the ʻIdaw ʻAlī Mauritanian clan, who claimed sharifian ancestors. Besides his role as Sufi master, he was also a well versed faqih, belonging to the Mālikī school. Many chains of transmission of the Tiǧāniyya in East Africa mount up to him.
