Biographic comments
He served as Grand Imām of al-Azhar from 1973 till his death. He is known for his modernizing approach to teaching, preaching moderation and embracing modern science as a religious duty. He wrote a great deal on Sufism, integrating the exoteric and esoteric dimensions of Islam: for these position he is referred to by his honorific title, al-Ghazali. In his writings he presents taṣawwuf as a scientific method that would enable people to comprehend the ultimate reality; taṣawwuf is considered as knowledge (maʻrifa) in the metaphysical domain.
