He was possibly from Egypt, because in one surviving manuscript, the author makes a reference to Upper Egypt. On the other hand, names such as Badmasi, Gbadamosi and Bidmus are widely used in Nigeria. (Arabic Literature in Africa, vol. 2, p. 50)
